The Death of Christ

Correr Museum, Venice, Italy

In images of this type the Father receives the Son, represented as the dead body of Christ, while putti carry to Heaven some of the instruments of the Passion – in this case, the crown of thorns and the scourge. The dove above the Father and Son, representing the Holy Spirit, is not always seen in this type of image but is always in the closely related "Throne of Mercy" type.
